The Best Beach Wedding Locations in Pensacola and Destin
If you’re dreaming of a Florida beach wedding, you’ve likely narrowed your search down to two of the most beautiful coastlines on the Gulf: Pensacola Beach and Destin. Both offer that famous sugar-white sand and emerald water, but they have completely different vibes and logistics.
Here is a breakdown of the best local spots to say "I do" in each area, along with the permit rules you need to know.
Pensacola Beach: Relaxed, Historic, and Accessible
Pensacola Beach is known for its laid-back, community-centered vibe, historic charm, and vast stretches of wide, unobstructed sand. It’s perfect for couples looking for a classic, uncomplicated beach ceremony.
Top Wedding Spots
- Casino Beach: Right in the heart of the action near the pier. It is lively and vibrant, making it great for couples who love a high-energy atmosphere and want easy access to local restaurants for an after-party.
- Park Shoreline (Fort Pickens / Gulf Islands National Seashore): For a more secluded, dramatic backdrop, heading west toward Fort Pickens offers rugged sand dunes, sea oats, and a pristine, untouched natural setting.
- Quietwater Beach: Located on the sound side, this spot offers completely calm, wave-free waters. It’s an excellent, intimate option if you want a serene setting or are worried about heavy surf.
Permitting & Rules
- Permit Required: Yes, for most formal setups. If you are planning a ceremony on the main public beaches managed by the Santa Rosa Island Authority, you will need to fill out a Special Event Application. This will be handled by your planner.
- National Seashore Rules: If you choose the federally managed Gulf Islands National Seashore (like the areas near Fort Pickens or Opal Beach), you must secure a Special Use Permit through the National Park Service.
Destin & The 30A Corridor: Luxury, Emerald Waters, and Upscale Coastal Vibes
Destin and the neighboring communities along Scenic Highway 30A (like Miramar Beach and Rosemary Beach) are famous for their world-class resorts, beautiful emerald waters, and a distinctly upscale, vacation-destination atmosphere.
Top Wedding Spots
Henderson Beach State Park: A local favorite for weddings because it preserves a massive stretch of natural, majestic coastal dunes. It offers a more private, protected environment compared to the public beach lookouts flanked by high-rises. I have had the privilage of photogaphing 2 beach wedding here and love it.
Miramar Beach: Known for wide shorelines and breathtaking sunset views. It is surrounded by luxury rentals and beachside condos, making it incredibly convenient for guests to walk straight from their lodging to your ceremony. I actually do most of my proposals session here and still find it just as good as Henderson.
The 30A Communities (Rosemary Beach & Seaside): Just down the road from Destin, these neighborhoods offer manicured, European-inspired architecture right against the sand. They are perfect for high-end, editorial-style beach weddings.
Permitting & Rules
- Okaloosa County / Destin Permits: If you are getting married on a public beach in Destin, you must apply for a beach wedding permit through Okaloosa County. Be aware that the county regulates commercial beach vendors strictly, so your vendors must be registered. Don't worry, I'll have my permit to photograph and most likely so will your wedding planner.
- Walton County (30A & Miramar): If your dream spot is in Miramar Beach or around Rosemary Beach, you are dealing with Walton County. They require a Beach Activity Permit for weddings. Walton County is highly protective of its shorelines, so applying well in advance is essential to ensure your location allows setups like arches and chairs.
Which Shoreline Fits Your Vision?
- Choose Pensacola Beach if you want wide-open spaces, a relaxed timeline, easy permitting, and a timeless, classic Florida look.
- Choose Destin or 30A if you want that iconic, crystal-clear emerald water backdrop, luxury resort amenities, and a high-end vacation experience for your guests.
